Yacht interior design in Italy.

Refined fabrics, premium leathers, and meticulous attention to detail define my refitting approach. Each space on board is carefully imagined and crafted to be unique, exclusive, and deeply personal. Every project places the client’s comfort and lifestyle at the centre, enriching the yacht’s interior with bespoke, made-to-order designs tailored down to the finest stitching.

The ultimate goal is to reflect and redefine the owner’s vision, choices, and taste through an integration of custom solutions and design. Every element, from upholstery to textures, is carefully curated to highlight luxury and style.

Italian Heritage with Modern Yachting Needs

Blending Italian heritage with modern yachting needs is at the core of my design philosophy. Rooted in a rich tradition of Italian craftsmanship and artistry, my work honours centuries-old techniques, especially in upholstery and furniture making, while integrating cutting-edge innovations tailored to the unique demands of yachting life. Characterised by exquisite handmade details, natural materials, and timeless beauty, while addressing contemporary needs such as durability, functionality, and marine-grade performance.

Whether crafting custom Italian furniture in my studio or sourcing marble from my own quarry, I ensure that every element respects both the past and the present, marrying classic luxury with state-of-the-art solutions. This thoughtful fusion creates yacht interiors that are not just beautiful but resilient and perfectly suited for life at sea.

Catia Paoli’s Approach

The journey of yacht interior design begins long before the first sketch; it starts with truly understanding the client. The foundation of every successful project is a deep and ongoing dialogue. Our first meetings are more than consultations, I listen attentively to the owner’s dreams, preferences and personality. During this initial phase, I spend time aboard the yacht or reviewing layouts for new builds. This helps me to assess both the interior and exterior spaces.

Each yacht has its own spirit, and I strive to sense its atmosphere, the unique opportunities and limitations that will guide the design and styling. You may desire a contemporary look or a timeless, classic ambience; these early conversations bring clarity to our vision.

Inspirational Concepts and Mood Boards

Next, I will develop inspirational concepts and moodboards, samples of furniture and fabric, accessories, sketches and preliminary layouts. My design studio is fully equipped to make individual furnishings, drawing on my expertise as an upholsterer and unique ability to produce my own Italian furniture. Here, the ideas and selections become tangible, each detail shaped by a commitment to detail and client feedback.

I refine ideas together, blending cutting-edge materials with Italian craftsmanship, and ensure that each space flows seamlessly from interior to exterior, supporting both luxury and function on yachts and superyachts. Throughout, I remain flexible and responsive; if a challenge arises, my dedication means that issues can be sorted within days and not weeks.

The process runs smoothly, and expectations are always exceeded. With vision and plan in place, I move forward to production and installation, continuing the story of personalised luxury from concept to reality, honouring every client’s individuality with spaces designed to inspire and delight.

Yacht Interior Installation

Once the design, planning stages, and fabric selection are complete, installation begins. Where ideas and craftsmanship take physical form. For me, this phase is the collaboration of expertise, attention to detail invested in this project.

The process starts with meticulous preparation. Every piece of bespoke Italian furniture, each handcrafted accessory, and the finest upholstery are reviewed and readied by me or the upholstery team. I coordinate closely with Il Tappezziere and technical specialists in Italy to ensure a flawless integration of materials and designs. The transition from studio to yacht demands precision, so every dimension and finish is checked and matched to the interior and exterior environments.

During installation, my team and I oversee each step, working directly on-site whenever possible. This hands-on approach ensures that every element, from custom cabinetry and seating to luxury fabrics and state-of-the-art lighting, is positioned perfectly, enhancing both the beauty and utility of the spaces. Challenges are welcomed as opportunities for refinement; our commitment means any last-minute adjustments are swiftly addressed, preserving the integrity and harmony of the final result.

It’s deeply rewarding to witness the owner’s vision come to life and to know that every piece reflects their tastes, crafted by hand with the passion and expertise that define our studio.

Fabrics & Materials for Yacht Interior & Exterior Design

As an interior yacht designer, I believe that the soul of a yacht’s living space emerges from the interplay of textures, finishes, and the sensory richness of carefully chosen materials. Wood, marble, silk, leather, and fur all play iconic roles in my interiors, but just as vital are the specialised fabrics and performance materials selected for both interior and exterior use.

Learn more about Italian Marble.

Interior Yacht Materials: Craft and Luxury

  • Wood anchors the ambience, from hand-varnished oak and walnut to exotic varieties with unique grain. Used for cabinetry, wall panels, and staircase details, wood provides tactile warmth and refined elegance.
  • Marble, especially Italian, offers visual drama and timeless sophistication for tabletops, vanity surfaces, and accent panels. Each slab is selected for its distinct veining and colour.
  • Silk & Fine Textiles such as silk damask, velvet, and wool add softness, luminescence, and a rich tactile dimension. Custom draperies, bedding, and upholstery are crafted to reflect clients’ unique tastes.
  • Leather brings depth and resilience, lining seating, headboards, and cabinetry. Carefully selected hides, often Italian, are finished for marine conditions.
  • Fur, used minimally and ethically, creates luxurious touches in throws and cushions, heightening comfort in lounges and suites.
  • Natural Fabrics (Treated): Cotton, wool, and linen offer comfort and breathability for interior use, but when treated with water-repellent and UV-protective coatings, they can be used in interior and exterior settings. Their durability may not match that of synthetic marine fabrics, but advances in protective technology are expanding possibilities.

Exterior Fabrics: Performance and Elegance

Designing for exterior yacht spaces introduces unique challenges, constant exposure to sun, salt, wind, and rain demands high-performance textiles that remain beautiful and functional.

  • Marine Fabrics: Renowned for fade resistance, UV protection, mildew resistance, and easy cleaning, Sunbrella is ideal for exterior cushions, sun pads, and protective awnings/loungers. Their Horizon Marine Vinyl is exceptionally comfortable, mould-resistant, and available in luxe finishes and colours.
  • Marine-Grade Vinyl: Waterproof, UV-resistant, and easy to clean, this material is perfect for high-traffic areas such as cockpit seating, sunbeds, and helm chairs. It mimics leather or woven textures and withstands heavy use.
  • Acrylic Canvas: Lightweight, highly UV stable, breathable, and water repellent, acrylic canvas is often chosen for Bimini tops, covers, and exterior cushions.
  • Polyester Blends: When treated for marine use, polyester blends combine lightweight design, flexibility, and good weather resistance, offering a budget-friendly solution for covers and outdoor soft furnishings.
  • Mesh & Technical Fabrics: Some seating and shading structures benefit from mesh fabrics that dry quickly, breathe well, and prevent mildew. These materials are ideal for sun protection zones.

In my studio, each fabric is hand-selected for the specific demands of the vessel and the lifestyle of its owner. I work directly with suppliers to secure the finest technical textiles and collaborate with Italian artisans to blend marine performance with tailor-made luxury. All fabricated to enhance the aesthetic and comfort of indoor and outdoor spaces without compromise.

Custom Furniture for Yachts

Unlike residential interiors, yacht environments present unique challenges that off-the-shelf furniture simply cannot address. The constant movement of the sea, the curvature of hulls, and the premium placed on every inch of space demand bespoke solutions that blend form and function perfectly.

In my work, I collaborate closely with expert Italian carpenters and upholsterers who bring generations of craftsmanship to this specialised field. Together, we create custom sofas that embrace the yacht’s curved walls, offering not only comfort but also a precise fit that enhances the flow of the interior. Dining tables are engineered to anchor securely, maintaining stability even in rough waters, while built-in wardrobes and storage units are thoughtfully designed to maximise every available space without sacrificing elegance.

Each piece of furniture is a carefully crafted synthesis of aesthetic appeal and marine-grade engineering. The construction uses durable, lightweight materials that withstand moisture, movement, and marine conditions, yet retain the luxurious look and feel expected in a high-end yacht. Handcrafted Italian furniture making ensures that every seam, curve, and finish meets the highest standards of quality and beauty, reflecting the owner’s style and the yacht’s overarching design narrative.
