When envisioning the world’s most luxurious yachts and homes, one material consistently stands out for its timeless elegance and enduring value: marble. Catia Paoli is a leading name in yacht and home interior design. Marble is not just a surface; it’s a statement of heritage, artistry, and innovation. With roots in the legendary marble caves of Carrara, Tuscany, and a passion for bespoke Italian craftsmanship, Catia Paoli transforms natural stone into breathtaking interiors that sail the seas and grace the world’s finest residences.

The Legacy of Italian Marble: From the Apuan Alps to the World

Marble has been synonymous with luxury for millennia. The Apuan Alps in Italy, particularly the region around Carrara, host the largest marble concentration in the world. Extraction from these mountains dates back over 2,000 years, with Carrara marble famously used in Roman monuments and Renaissance masterpieces by Michelangelo. The white Carrara marble, renowned for its pure, crystalline appearance, remains one of the most sought-after stones globally, symbolizing both tradition and innovation.

Marble has been in my family for hundreds of years. I proudly own a marble quarry that has been a source of exceptional stone and craftsmanship across generations. This deep-rooted heritage in marble extraction forms the foundation of my design philosophy, blending tradition with innovation to create stunning marble yacht interiors. Our quarry, located in the renowned Apuan Alps, produces some of the world’s most precious white marble, including the iconic Carrara, which has been celebrated globally for its purity and elegance. This legacy allows us to offer clients not only unparalleled quality but also a unique story embedded in every slab of stone we use.

Yacht Marble Varieties: A Palette of Possibilities

I offer an exceptional range of marbles and natural stones, each with its own character and story:

White Carrara Marble

The classic choice, known for its luminous white surface and subtle veining. It is the gold standard for yacht interiors, offering both beauty and durability.

Calacatta Marble

Another prestigious white marble, Calacatta is known for its bold, dramatic veining and a warmer tone compared to Carrara. It brings a sense of drama and exclusivity to interiors.

Trambisera Marble

A distinctive red marble from the Trambisera basin, offering rich color and unique veining for statement features. The beauty of this gray marble, crossed by numerous veins, lies in the fact that its appearance changes depending on the type of finish. One example is this shower base with a ‘damatura’ finish, which visually transforms it, making it look like an entirely different marble.

Tempesta Marbles

Tempesta Marbles represents a blend of Italian-inspired design, advanced surface technology, and timeless craftsmanship. Known for their luxurious collections, Tempesta has established a unique identity in the decorative stone and marble industry by combining natural materials with innovative finishes and artistic collaborations.

Fire Basin Marbles

Sourced from the legendary Apuan Alps, these marbles range from pure white to varieties with intricate patterns and colours, including Bardiglio and Breccia marbles.

Imported Marbles and Granites

Graphite-hued and dark marbles, along with many other striking varieties, are sourced from quarries around the world and contribute richly to global interior design palettes. While Italy is revered for its Carrara and Statuario marbles, equally distinctive stones come from regions such as Spain (noted for rich brown and black marbles like Nero Marquina and Marron Emperador), Greece (famed for bright Thassos White and dramatic Volakas), India (producer of Makrana marble), and Iran (home to the bold gray veined Pietra Grey).

Other countries like Turkey, North Macedonia, and the United States also quarry marbles with unique colors and veining from deep greens and blues to subtle grays reflecting local geology and traditional craftsmanship. I can source all of these marbles, ensuring that you have the right look and feel for your area, whether it be a kitchen, bathroom, or any other living space. From classic elegance to modern minimalism, I’ll help you find the perfect stone that complements your style and enhances the character of your home or yacht.

Marble on Yachts: Challenges and Innovations

Designing marble for yachts presents unique challenges. Traditional marble is heavy and brittle, making it seemingly incompatible with the demands of marine environments. However, advances in technology and craftsmanship have revolutionized how marble is used at sea and especially on superyachts.

Lightweight Marble Panels

By bonding thin marble sheets to honeycomb or composite backings, designers achieve the look and feel of solid stone at a fraction of the weight. This innovation allows for larger, seamless surfaces and reduces the impact on the yacht’s stability and fuel efficiency.

Ultra-thin Stone

Panels as thin as 7mm can be used for walls, floors, and furniture, providing flexibility without sacrificing luxury.

Backlit Marble

Translucent marbles like onyx can be backlit to create dramatic feature walls, bar tops, and illuminated surfaces, an effect that is especially striking on yachts.

Precision Craftsmanship

Every marble component is meticulously templated, cut, and finished to meet the exacting standards required for marine use, ensuring durability and longevity even in challenging conditions.

Applications of marble on yachts include:

  • Marble for Yacht Bathrooms and Spas: Marble brings a spa-like serenity and sophistication, with seamless floors, walls, and vanity tops.
  • Marble Dining Areas: Durable and hygienic, marble surfaces enhance dining spaces.
  • Marble for Kitchens: Marble brings timeless beauty and natural elegance to kitchens. Durable and versatile, it’s perfect for countertops, backsplashes, and islands. Marble in the kitchen brings a classic, refined look that complements both modern and traditional spaces.
  • Feature Walls and Furniture: Custom marble tables, bars, and wall panels become focal points of onboard luxury.
  • Staircases and Flooring: Marble’s durability and beauty make it ideal for high-traffic areas, with slip-resistant finishes for safety.
  • Marble accessories: including essence diffusers, bath salt holders, and candle holders, designed to enhance any space with subtle luxury.

The Process – from Marble Quarry to Yacht

As an interior designer, my approach to incorporating marble into yacht interiors begins with a deep understanding of my client’s vision, the yacht’s architecture, and the unique challenges of the marine environment. The design process starts with a collaborative dialogue, where we explore the desired atmosphere, color palette, and the specific areas where marble can make the most impact, such as bathrooms, feature walls, or custom furniture.

I carefully select the type of marble, considering not only its visual appeal but also its suitability for each space; for example, the luminous purity of white Carrara for serene bathrooms, or the dramatic veining of Calacatta for statement dining tables. I create detailed sketches and digital renderings to visualize how the marble’s natural patterns will flow through the space, ensuring harmony with other materials and finishes on board.

Once the design is approved, I oversee the templating process, where precise measurements are taken to accommodate the yacht’s curves and dimensions. I often invite clients to participate in the stone selection, either in person or virtually, to choose the exact slabs that will be used, making each project truly bespoke. The marble is then custom-cut and finished by skilled craftsmen, with special attention to edge profiles and seamless joints. To address the weight constraints and movement at sea, I specify the use of lightweight marble panels bonded to honeycomb aluminum backing, which allows for large, elegant surfaces without compromising the yacht’s performance.

The marble is securely packaged and delivered to the yacht, often using specialist logistics providers experienced in marine and superyacht transport, who coordinate every detail from customs documentation to bespoke cradles for safe handling and loading. When the yacht is in port or at the shipyard, trained technicians carefully move the marble pieces onboard, using cranes or other lifting equipment as needed, and install them according to the precise design specifications. The use of lightweight panels not only streamlines this process but also minimizes the risk of damage during handling and ensures the marble can be seamlessly integrated into the yacht’s interior, even in spaces with complex curves or limited access.

The installation phase involves preparing the substrate for stability and waterproofing, dry-laying the marble for a perfect fit and veining alignment, and then fixing each piece in place with marine-grade adhesives. After sealing and grouting, I conduct a meticulous inspection to ensure every detail meets my standards of luxury and durability. This holistic process from initial concept to final installation ensures that each yacht interior I design is not only visually stunning but also crafted to withstand the unique demands of life at sea.

Every installation is a testament to my commitment to perfection, ensuring each yacht is as unique as its owner. This approach is especially vital in the world of superyacht interiors, where every millimeter counts and every material must withstand the rigors of life at sea while exuding class.
